The message below is senton behalf of Brian Smith, Associate Vice Chancellor, Interim Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer
Please join me in welcoming Laurie Herraiz as the new Director of the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP). In this role, Laurie will work with the HRPP staff, Institutional Review Board (IRB) committee members, and the broader UCSF research community to protect participants and initiate studies in a timely fashion.
Laurie brings a wealth of experience to the Director position, having been with HRPP for nearly seven years. She has served as the CRS Analyst and as the Director of Operations and Quality Improvement. Prior to moving into research protections, Laurie conducted research for 11 years at the former General Clinical Research Center at ZSFG as the Bionutrition Supervisor. She provided research support and collaboration in endocrinology, HIV, and cardiology studies.
During her 18 years at UCSF, Laurie has built thriving relationships across the research enterprise. She is a Certified IRB Professional (CIP), Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP), and a Registered Dietitian (RD). Laurie has also been a Teaching Fellow for the CTSI’s Responsible Conduct of Research course and has also taught “Health Law: Research Compliance & Ethics” as part of UCSF/UC Hastings Consortium on the Law, Science and Health Policy.
Laurie will start in her new role as the Director on December 18. Laurie will use her knowledge of UCSF, research ethics and compliance, and IRB management, in collaboration with key stakeholders to keep UCSF investigators at the forefront of clinical research while offering our patients the most promising and innovative therapies.
